Songs for Tomorrow
Could it be, another revolution / Wait and see, if the tables can be turned / Is it time, to stand out of the grime / And catch the last hurray before it dies / Could it be another page is turning / Fantasy, slowly growing cold / If you find the colours of your mind / And add it to the greyness of despair. / Chorus: Hold me tight, until I see the light / And if inspiration crumbles / We’ll escape the desperation of this song / Hold me tight, until I see the light / And as I step into infinity / I hope you’re smiling while you’re closing down the door /
If you find, that the truth is far behind you / And the signs, slowly take you to the end / And the taste is bitter in my mouth / And I can’t get rid of the self inflicting doubt

Hold me was written in 2 stages, the melody and chords came whilst I was recording “Open your eyes” in Durban, The lyrics were written in Italy, in the swealtering Flat of San Lorenzo in Rome… Rome gets really hot in Summer! Joe contributed a lot to this song with his unique style…
Searching in the circle of words, you feel alone / Reaching for the cycle of pearls, please take me home / So take my hand, let’s make a stand / Successful means, please understand / So don’t feel blue, it’s all for you / Merciful gifts that we must do / Chorus:A woman without love, is like a saturday without sun / A woman without love, will keep your Sunday blues on the run / I stay away, long for the day / To see you keep the sharks at bay / Lost in the silence of gold, speak to me / Looking for the wisdom of old, I’ll set you free / So take my hand, let’s make a stand / Successful means, please understand / So don’t feel blue, it’s all for you / merciful gifts that we must do

Woman Without came from “Signora Puccionni” who lived in Florence. On a visit to this wise lady who has been a friend of my family for a very long time, we got chatting about relationships and more specifically about long distance relationships, and then she just said… “Una donna senza amore e come un sabato senza sole” which means, a woman without love is like a saturday without sun… The song just came out! I’d been playing that song for a long time, It became a favourite at beach parties and around the fire…it was time to record it!! I miss you signora Maria…
You turn the key and re-discover self esteem / Open you eyes and step inside this vivid dream / It’s all tangible if you know how to feel / What if you find that the dark brightness is for real / That you’re entwined in this existence you should heal / Someone will push you just to see your own extreme Chorus: But when you see your road keeps meeting my horizon / We live to hope and hope to give without denying / That we rely on our intuition not our fears Not our fears Sometime the bleeding stops before it has begun / And it’s the dreaming that you need to see the sun / Another story finds the ending it deserves

To fight the power of fear is one of my missions… Writen at a time of change…
It was like in that moment when vision is clear / Before the clouds gather, before it gets complicated / Not a mystic delusion, not a social cliché / Don’t know where she came from, don’t know why she came Chorus: She keeps the narrow spaces, between heaven and the sky / She knows when to embrace my dieing lullaby / She’s warmer than the sunshine, in a cold delightful way / A blessing or a curse, my muse is here to stay / Here to stay. She’s here to stay She’s a cryptic illusion a mystery unsolved / If the wings of the sky ever learn to unfold / You compile your emotions that you’re longing to reach / Turn into devotion as you falling in too deep / You could call it a talent a delightful display / If it had been a choice then I could take the blame / But she opened the door with a blistering wind / A divine intervention twisted into a sin

One of those songs that just fell from the sky… Had so much fun with dave crafting his guitar parts… This is recent! A muse is not a person or a thing, it’s a condition.
A Flower Died, A Child Is Born / A River Cries Within A Storm / The Sea Awakes, With Lion Eyes / The Gentle Breeze Dreams Of Disguise / Uniform Rainbow Bulging With Gold / Clouds Bleed The Rain, Reap What You Grow / Two Lovers Lost, On Common Ground / A Violet Day Barks At The Hounds / A Cirrus Thought Slipping Away / Eternity Longs For Decay / Loosing Your Path In Forests Of Clay / Moulding Despair Dances Away / A Friendly Wave Misunderstood / What You Think And What You Should / Recover Tears On Broken Lips / Are You Ready For The Trip?

Another song that has been around for a long time. When I started playing with Dave Ledbetter in Cape Town, we messed around with it and Dave loved it, And I really liked the way he played on it. It was first a poem and then a song… Thanks to Gavin minter who’s house I was looking after for a few weeks, he had all the percusive toys, but the most fun I had was with his wind chimes…I wish i could play percusion better.
Caught in a trap, of perfect illusion / No turning back, into the dark dingy space / Dreaming a dream, of loosing your fears / Of facing the fact that life is infinite Chorus: It’s a long way to paradise / And if you can’t get there it’s just your own demise / It’s a long way to paradise / And the road you choose can take you by surprise / Living the edge of delicate balance / Finding the wisdom keeps depression at bay / Reach the extreme of your fantasy / Where you don’t need no disguise / It could be so easy, to let it all go / So why hang on to complexity? / And the road you take can choose you by surprise
RECORDED AT THE SOUNDFACTORY. GUITARS AND BACKING VOCALS: JOE VAN DER LINDEN / PROGRAMING AND KEYS: PHILIPP MAIER
This is the only song Joe and I have managed to write together. When we hook up we generally spend most of our time on the beach Kiting and surfing…And then playing music to earn a living…which in South Africa means no original music. No time to write music. Appropriatly though, the song was written on the beach, in Umhlanga…Paradise was recorded during the Open your eyes sessions in 25 minutes!! We had to rush off to a gig!! Philipp made some magic in the studio and Voila…

Is there another reason I should find you / To walk the same old road that we deny / To draw another dream across the skyline / Our souls entwined, before we start / I heard the news now is the time for leaving / To throw behind the salt caught in my eyes / But things are never really what they seem / Caught in between, our mind and soul / And it’s the colours you see in your head / It’s the rainbows in the things left unsaid / It’s a desolate empire that gets left beneath the mire / When the stink of life comes creeping up instead. / If freedom be my cross I fear my saviour / If brightness makes me lost I dig my hole / And fear is the companion for my sins / Scarred to go in, scarred to come out. / And it’s the monsters you’ll find in my head / The desire for the things you can’t get / It’s desperate asylum where everyone will triumph / And my little fears are once again been fed / It’s the colours you see in your head / It’s the rainbows in the things left unsaid / It’s a desolate empire that gets left beneath the mire / When the stink of life comes creeping up instead. / It’s a desolate desire, that must live behind the fire / And my little fears are once again been fed

If it feels so good, Than it must be bad / Like the cross in the sky, Jesus’ last goodbye / If it’s out to take, What the witches said / Then the circles are dead, Like the dreams in my head / Could the judgement be a lie? / Could it be big brother’s eyes? Chorus: ‘cause it’s a mind fake heartache, Beaten into a smile / ‘cause it’s a mistake to think it’s too late, So twist the words in my mind / And as the bleeding, feeling subsides / Decide to sleep on it / Fleeting moments, In floating time / Watching death that goes by / Falling into my eyes / If it feels too strange, Then it’s all the same / Like a hole in my head / Like the snakes in your bed / Could the judgement be a lie? / Could it be big brother’s eyes?

“Sleep on it” is a song I started messing around with in Italy with my band there… But somehow it always stayed acoustic. Dreams can be answers but also torment.

I have been singing in French for so long! It was time I wrote one! There is a duet version with English lyrics… Possibly for the 2nd edition.

This was a test song recorded in a room in a house in Umhlanga. I was testing this hard disc recording unit, and joe just jammed… I kept it and guess what, it survived. It’s become a theme song of sorts. Always on the move. And to try and keep that innocence. Not always easy. Thank you Mister Page and Plant for such a wonderful song
I’ve been waiting for you, Silly grin, shiny shoes / I’ve been waiting for you, Broken dreams, devil blues / I was waiting for you, Like a dog by the freeway / Empty eyes, broken stare, Step in front of the glare / Don’t close your eyes, Let the brightness inside / Open your soul, Let your fears be dissolved / Life is a story untold, Just like the lines in your hands / If you Hold it too tight, It will burn your desire / I’ve been waiting for you, In the drizzling madness / The surprise of abandon, In this river of sadness / I was hoping that you, Would be there to retrieve me / From this flight of despair, Help me fight this nightmare / Don’t close your eyes, Let the brightness inside / Open your soul, Let your fears be dissolved / Life is a story untold, Just like the lines in your hands / If you Hold it too tight, It will burn your desire / I was waiting for you/ There’s no disguise / I’ve been waiting for you/ Behind your eyes / I was waiting for you/ right next to you / I was dying for you
RECORDED AT THE SOUNDFACTORY. PIANO AND VOCALS: AMANDA TIFFIN / GUITAR:CED
I had this dark song but it was incomplete, an afternoon with Amanda and light shone a little brighter… Thank you
Could you sing a song for the dead / Cause a spoken word can’t be read / Just a magic tale, a haunted melody / Let the spirit roam free / When your light grows dim with distrust / And existence turns arduous / It’s a masquerade which you don’t have to play / Take the steps and take them today / Chorus: It doesn’t have to be, the same as yesterday / A written memory to erase / It doesn’t have to say that there is no other way / So believe in the songs for tomorrow
Should we sing until we are heard / Moonlight dance into the absurd / Don’t you know the truth, A crown of consciousness / And the Wisdom we’ll never possess /
Even as the whirlpool sux you in / Even if the clouds start to scream / Even if the feelings start to bleed / Even if you’ve got no place for dreams
RECORDED AT “BETWEEN THE OCEAN AND THE SKY” STUDIOS. RHYTHM GUIT: CED / SOLO GUITAR: DAVE LEDBETTER
I have no Idea why this song became a country tune… It was very lyrically driven, the words just fell into place, and I kind of forgot about the music. I’m also wondering why I’m babbling on about these songs… Is anybody listening anymore??? Never Mind reading. Sometimes it’s hard to find the motivation to carry on, So I guess I’ll just write songs for tomorrow
