Songs Lost in Translation

Daphne Kuhn, of the Liberty Theatre on the Square, has a particular talent for finding artists who embody the concept of true entertainment.

Her new music revue, Songs Lost in Translation, starring Cedric Vandenschrik accompanied by Dave Ledbetter, opened on 8 August 2006 for a very short season with the final performance being on 26 August 2006.

Using a theme of translated songs, Vandenschrik sings in French, Italian and English, all languages in which he is proficient.

At times the material, both spoken and sung, is amusing, and little musical jokes abound in the accompaniment, and there are moments when the music tugs at one's heartstrings plaintively, but the overall effect is always riveting and delightfully entertaining.

Even the least musical ears will recognize Frank Sinatra's "My Way", Jobim's "The Girl from Ipanema", Elvis' "It's Now or Never", Jacques Brel's "Season's in the Sun" and "If You Go Away", Piaf's "Autumn Leaves", and Louis Armstrong's "Mac the Knife" regardless of the language in which they are sung.

The impersonation of Piaf comes early in the performance where one is not yet sure of the direction of the evening, but even the most devoted opera lovers will find the impersonation of Pavarotti hilarious.

Vandenschrik bring two of his own compositions to the mix and reminds one, modestly, of course, that his CD can be purchased outside after the performance.

A thoroughly delightful evening.
